How it works

Holiday costs creep up. This adds flights, accommodation, daily spending, transfers or car hire, travel insurance and getting to the airport into one total, and shows the cost per person and per day.

Spending money is the hardest part to guess. Budget more for expensive cities (Switzerland, Scandinavia, New York) and less for places like Turkey, Thailand or Portugal.

Worked examples

  • Couple, 7 nights in Spain → Total holiday cost: £2,245 · Per person: £1,123 · Per person per day: £140.31
  • Family of 4, 10 nights → Total holiday cost: £5,030 · Per person: £1,258 · Per person per day: £114.32
  • Solo city break, 3 nights → Total holiday cost: £750 · Per person: £750 · Per person per day: £187.50

Common questions

How much spending money do I need for a week?

It depends on the destination. £40–70 per person per day covers meals out and some activities in much of southern Europe. Expensive cities can be £100+.

How do I save for a holiday?

Divide the total by the months until you go. A £2,000 holiday in 8 months is £250 a month.
